# The codebase is too messy for anyone to continue

VC-50 · Cursor · Claude Code · Lovable · Bolt · Updated October 2026 · By [Nathaniel Kelley](https://whocanfixmyapp.com/authors/nathaniel-kelley)

Quick verdict

Get an engineer for this one. Needs an engineer, but you can prepare the ground

- **How serious**: Medium
- **Fix it yourself?**: No, get an engineer
- **Typical cost**: $49–$800 audit, then $1,500–$15,000 cleanup or a rebuild from €12,000 ([prices](https://whocanfixmyapp.com/pricing))
- **Top rated for Cursor**: [Afterbuild Labs](https://whocanfixmyapp.com/companies/afterbuild-labs) · **10.0**/10

**What you see.** Every developer you show the code to quotes a rebuild, and every new prompt breaks something that used to work.

## Why it happens

AI agents solve the prompt in front of them. Asked to fix a button, they add a new component rather than edit the old one. Asked three times about sign-in, they leave three ways of doing it. Over months the app collects dead files, duplicate logic and a database full of columns nobody uses. Nothing has tests, so nobody knows what is safe to touch, which is why every change breaks something else.

Lovable's own guidance describes the habits that prevent this: one change per prompt, verify in the preview, find the root cause before changing any code, bookmark working versions, and for tangled projects remix a clean copy. Most founders learn those habits after the mess exists. The decision now is fix or rebuild, and it should be made from an audit, not from a developer's first impression. Our guide to that choice is at [fix or rebuild](https://whocanfixmyapp.com/fix-or-rebuild).

## Fix it yourself

1. Get the code into a Git repository you own, so an engineer can read the history. See [no GitHub repo](https://whocanfixmyapp.com/problems/i-dont-own-my-code-no-github-repo).
2. Write a one-page brief: what the app does, who uses it, and which three flows make money. In Lovable, this is what the knowledge file is for.
3. List what works, what is broken, and what you have stopped using. Do not guess at causes, just describe what you see.
4. If the backend is Supabase, open the **Security Advisor** and **Performance Advisor** and save the findings. They give a neutral picture of the database.
5. Ask for a code audit with a fix-or-rebuild verdict, not for a rewrite. A $49–$800 check should name the five worst problems and estimate each path.
6. Stop prompting large changes until the verdict is in. Small, single-purpose prompts only, and bookmark the version that works today.

## When to get an engineer

This one needs an engineer from the start. Tell them the stack, the age of the project, your user count, and whether the app earns money today. Ask for the audit first, then a fixed quote. Cleanup and hardening runs $1,500–$15,000 over one to eight weeks and keeps your data and users. A rebuild starts from €12,000 over 4–16 weeks and makes sense when the audit shows the core is unsound or the stack cannot be hosted where you need it.

## Check these

CODE-03 · Medium

Dead code and duplicate components are removed

Search for components with near-identical names. Three versions of one button means three places to fix every bug.

CODE-02 · Medium

The flows that make money have tests

Sign-up, checkout and the core action. A few end-to-end tests catch most regressions from new prompts.

CODE-04 · Medium

Dependencies are current and audited

Run `npm audit`. Critical advisories in packages you ship should be fixed before launch.

CODE-01 · High

The code lives in a Git repository you own

Connect GitHub or export the project. If the builder account is lost, the product should not be.

## Questions

### Is a rebuild always the better choice?

No. A rebuild resets your bugs but also your data model, your users' habits and your timeline. Many apps need a cleanup of the worst parts, plus tests, and then keep going.

### Can the AI clean up its own mess?

Partly. Lovable suggests remixing a clean copy to rebuild with what you learned. Removing dead code safely still needs tests and a human review.
