What you see. Replit Agent has used most of your monthly credits, and the app still fails on the same feature.
Why it happens
Replit bills Agent work by effort, not by message. Its docs say simple requests cost less than complex builds, and a full build is bundled into one checkpoint that can cost more. Plan mode also bills for reasoning even when no code changes. So a vague request, such as asking Agent to make everything work, can trigger a long, expensive checkpoint that touches many files.
Credits burn fastest when Agent loops. It tries a fix, tests it, sees a new error, and tries again, all inside one paid checkpoint. Third-party model calls that Agent makes are billed at the provider's rate and deducted from the same credits. Nothing stops this except you, unless you set a budget limit in Settings → Billing, which Replit describes as a hard cap. Without a cap, a loop can run through a month of credits in an afternoon.
Fix it yourself
- Click Stop in the Agent panel the moment it starts repeating itself. Do not send the same prompt again.
- Go to Settings → Billing and set a budget limit and a usage alert. The limit is a hard cap, so a loop cannot run past it.
- Open replit.com/usage to see which checkpoints cost the most. Usage data can take up to 30 minutes to appear.
- In the Agent tab, find the last checkpoint where the app worked and select Rollback to here. Tick Database under additional rollback options if data changed too.
- Start a new Agent chat for the broken feature. Use Plan mode first, and start the prompt with the word Only to limit scope, as Replit's own help suggests.
- Make one change per message and test it before the next. Avoid full rebuild requests.
When to get an engineer
Hire when two rolled-back attempts still fail, or when the broken feature is sign-in, payments or anything that stores customer data. Give the engineer your Replit project link, the usage dashboard screenshot and the checkpoint history. A one-off check is $49–$800 and takes 1 day to 1 week. A single fix is €99–$990, about 2 days. If Agent also lost data, read Replit Agent stuck or lost data first.

The code lives in a Git repository you own
Connect GitHub or export the project. If the builder account is lost, the product should not be.
The flows that make money have tests
Sign-up, checkout and the core action. A few end-to-end tests catch most regressions from new prompts.
Testing and real users use separate databases
Experiments and AI agents should never run against production data.
Database backups run automatically and a restore has been tested
Check what your database plan actually includes, then restore a backup into a test project once.
Questions
Can I get the credits back?
Replit's help pages do not describe a refund process for Agent checkpoints. They point unanswered billing questions to Replit Support, so open a ticket with the checkpoint details.
Does rolling back refund the checkpoint?
No. Rollback restores files, packages and chat context to that checkpoint. The credits spent on later checkpoints stay spent.
